There are certain financial requirements for sponsorship, however, there are no specific income requirements when you are sponsoring your spouse or partner to Canada. You are required to show a certain level of financial capacity so that the immigration authorities know that you can provide for the basic necessities once your spouse or partner arrives in Canada. This is because you will be required to sign a 3-year undertaking to be financially responsible for them while they settle in Canada. An undertaking is a formal promise that you will be willing to take care of your sponsored spouse or partner during that period. The undertaking starts when they become a permanent resident. Whether through employment, savings, or assets, showcasing financial capability is key. Read on to uncover more about income requirements to sponsor a spouse in Canada
There are additional financial requirements that sponsors must meet in order to sponsor their spouse or partner. This includes:
- Sponsors must not be bankrupt, and any previous bankruptcy must be discharged.
- Sponsors cannot receive social assistance for anything other than disability.
- Sponsors must not be in financial default for any previous undertaking, immigration loan, or court-ordered support payments.
These requirements must be met when you apply to sponsor your spouse or partner. If any of the above requirements cannot be met, you must wait until they no longer apply and then start your sponsorship application.
Are there any circumstances where there is an income requirement?
Yes. In cases where you are sponsoring your spouse or partner that has a dependent child who has one or more dependent children of their own, then you must prove that you have an annual income equal to the minimum necessary income to support all necessary persons. The group of people you will be supporting will consist of yourself, dependent family members, your sponsored spouse or partner and their family members, as well as any other person that you are financially responsible for through past or current undertakings. This total number of persons will help you determine what minimum necessary income is required by the Government of Canada.
The ‘Federal Income Table, 2023’ below will help guide you on the income requirements needed if these circumstances apply to you:
Size of Family | Minimum Income Required |

1 person (the sponsor) | $27,514 |
